Student Health Information

All enrolled students at NCNM are required to carry comprehensive medical health insurance coverage. For the 2012-13 school year, NCNM has brokered a student health insurance option with Aetna Student Health. The annual cost is $1,490, payable in three payments – fall, winter and spring quarters – and coverage lasts from September 17, 2012 through September 15, 2013.

All students are auto–enrolled into the Aetna plan. For a complete summary of benefits please consult the 2012–13 Full Plan Brochure. Students carrying their own comprehensive health insurance who wish to waive the student health insurance have until the end of week two of the fall term. Students who matriculate in winter term have until the end of week two to waive. Spouses, domestic partners, and dependents can be added to the student health insurance for an additional cost. More information on costs can be found on the 2012–13 Student Health Insurance Summary.

Using Your Student Health Insurance

Pre-deductible benefits
The Student Health Insurance includes several pre–deductible benefits, which means they can be used right away, before the $250 deductible has been met. These include:

  • MD, ND and acupuncture office visits, outside the NCNM clinic: If in–network, “preferred provider,” these are covered at 100% after a $15 co–pay. Out–of–network, “non-preferred provider” visits are covered at 100% of “recognized charge” after a $15 co–pay, and the covered person is responsible for the remaining balance.
  • Mental health and substance abuse care: Under what’s called “mental health parity”, mental health and substance abuse expenses are payable as any other illness. This means that mental health/substance abuse related outpatient office visits are covered pre–deductible at the same rates as the office visits above. Inpatient visits are also covered, but subject to the deductible.
  • Preventive Services: Preventive care services are covered at the in/out-of-network levels. Preventive services include, but are not limited to:
    • Routine physical exam
    • “Medically necessary” immunizations and TB testing
    • Pap smears, mammograms and breast exams
    • Family planning
    • Chlamydia screening test
    • Routine screening for sexually transmitted disease
    • Routine colorectal and prostate cancer screening

Waiving Student Health Insurance

Students wishing to waive the student health insurance must do so online. All waiver requests must be submitted no later than the Friday of the second week of fall term. After this time, students are unable to waive out of the student health insurance for the academic year. Once a student waives the student health insurance, the opportunity to enroll at a later time is only permissible due to an unanticipated drop in personal coverage.

NCNM Clinic Benefit Plan (CBP)

NCNM offers a student clinic benefit plan designed to maximize benefits and flexibility for our students.

The NCNM Clinic Benefit Plan includes the following benefits per quarter:

  • Four clinic visits with NO co–pay, does not include additional supplies or services.
  • 50% off of lab charges up to a total of $200 in charges.
  • 50% off ANY medicinal item in the Medicinary, up to $750 in charges, no prescription required.

1)  The charge for the Clinic Benefit Plan is $200 per term. All students, not just those on the student health insurance, will be assessed this charge, although students may opt out of the CBP. Opt–out forms will be available in the Business Office and Student Life. Students may add dependents to the plan for an additional cost per dependent. All opt–out forms are due by the end of week two of any given term to the Business Office.

 2) Students may opt out in any quarter. Students choosing to opt out of the CBP will stay removed from the plan for the entire school year unless they specifically opt back in.

3) Benefits do NOT accrue; benefits begin the first day of the quarter and end the day before the next quarter begins. Unused benefits from a previous quarter are not available in the next quarter. Should a student exhaust his/her quarterly benefit, clinic, lab, and Medicinary services will revert to public pricing subject to whatever discount structure is then in place.

4) Summer term CBP will be opt in only. No student will be enrolled in CBP for summer, unless they specifically request to be.
