NCNM Campus Expansion

October 2008

Future Growth of the NCNM Campus
Since moving to our current location in August 1996, NCNM has used the 1900-era brick school building to house teaching facilities, offices, library, bookstore and other academic services.

In 2007, we acquired the building just north of this original structure to house administrative offices. Although it provides much-needed office space, we still are not able to accommodate all of NCNM’s core functions on campus.

Our two teaching clinics—an essential part of students’ academic experience—were previously leased or purchased as suitable property became available. Unfortunately both buildings are at some distance from campus, requiring significant travel time for students and faculty each day. It has become clear, as each graduating class is replaced with new students and as new programs are proposed, that we will soon outgrow all of our facilities.

But where can we find enough space to consolidate our primary teaching clinics, stay close to the network of satellite community clinics and accommodate future growth—all while maintaining our place in the heart of the city?

The answer: In our own backyard!

After negotiations with the property owners, we now have the ability to meet NCNM’s immediate expansion needs by extending the current campus footprint to the south.

Acquiring this property will not only anchor our campus in the neighborhood but will provide much needed space for future growth.

Our most pressing need is to consolidate the two teaching clinics and bring that educational and service function onto campus. A two-story office building, located at the foot of the Ross Island bridge on the newly acquired property, seems readymade for that purpose.

Flooded with natural light and constructed with a flexible floor plan easily remodeled to meet our needs, this space will house clinic facilities, retail space and perhaps even a tea bar or small organic foods bistro.

Other buildings on the property also can be remodeled to meet NCNM’s future needs. Ultimately, we will create a welcoming, multi-purpose campus which, in addition to educating physicians, will become a community gathering place for nurturing mind, body and spirit.

Positioned in the heart of the city, NCNM has flourished as new developments have sprung up around us. Now we will be part of that future for many years to come as we welcome each new generation of students and continue contributing to the health and well-being of our community and the profession.
