Maria Valdez is naturopathic doctor from Portland, Oregon. After graduating from the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) in 2010, she pursued a path in global health–living, working, volunteering and adventuring, primarily in Tanzania, East Africa; other African nations; Southeast Asia and beyond. Her focus is to study indigenous medicine practices around the world, especially related to the cultural variation of mental health practices.

Maria has diverse experiences in private practice, mental health, non-profit service, community development, teaching and public speaking. She promotes a global health paradigm based on social equity, cultural humility, knowledge exchange, empowerment, and human rights. In practice, Maria draws on the wisdom of Naturopathic medicine, in tandem with Ayurveda, Five Element Chinese medicine, and other natural medicine philosophies- along with the gifts of modern medical science.

Maria assists with curriculum development at NCNM in the school of graduate studies in the global health, nutrition, and other potential programs. She also teaches global health experience courses in Tanzania and Thailand, and travels extensively as part of a the study-abroad portion of the global health program.

Maria is currently acting as the Global Outreach Coordinator for the Herbal Anthropology Project. She serves on the board of directors for the Zimbabwe Artists Project and the OWLS Collective based in Portland, Oregon. Maria is also a writer, musician, and lover of the outdoors and travel.
