Dr. Tippens is a graduate of Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington, where she received her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and a master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. She completed a family practice residency at the National College of Natural Medicine with an emphasis on community health. After residency, Dr. Tippens was awarded a National Institutes of Health-funded post-doctoral fellowship, during which she received a Certificate in Human Investigations through the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), and participated in research evaluating expectancy in the treatment of metabolic syndrome and obesity. She has recently completed a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Fellowship Award (F32), receiving training in health disparities and health services research. She received her Master of Public Health degree from OHSU in 2012.

Dr. Tippens investigates the role that naturopathic medicine can play in addressing racial/ethnic disparities in health, and in meeting the needs of uninsured and medically underserved communities. Her research is aimed at establishing accessible, acceptable, and effective preventive care to diverse communities, and evaluating disparities in CAM access and utilization. This includes examining the content, costs and outcomes of CAM health services, as well as access to these services. Dr. Tippens’ current projects include A Mixed Methods Evaluation of Naturopathic and Allopathic Type 2 Diabetes Care, Assessing Community Acupuncture as a Disparity Reducing Advance and the 2010 NCNM Student Cultural Climate Survey.

In addition to conducting research, Dr. Tippens is an active member of NCNM AWARE (Actively Working to Advance Real Equity), and a Cultural Competency Trainer certified through the Cross Cultural Healthcare Program. She works with students and faculty to incorporate coursework and training in social medicine and culturally competent health care delivery, with the goal of promoting diversity and excellence in medical education. As a member of the NCNM Vanguard Faculty, she has also been involved in the movement to incorporate the principles of evidence-based medicine into the naturopathic curriculum.
