NCNM Library News
Fall 2011

Britannica Image Quest (2011)
The library has added a subscription to Britannica Image Quest. It contains images on all subjects, including health and medicine. NCNM faculty can use these images in their class presentations without having to get copyright permission first. Click here for an appropriate link: NCNM links to Britannica Image Quest.

UpToDate (2011)
The library has added a subscription to UpToDate, the clinician support database, and dropped its subscription to DynaMed. Click here for an appropriate link: NCNM links to UpToDate.

Chilton Special Collection in Botanical Science (2011)
Mike and Simone Chilton are in the process of donating a major collection of botanical science books (1,000+ titles) to the library. The collection includes many rare books from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, including, for example, Gerard's Herball (1633) and Ray's Historia Plantarum (1686). Mr. Chilton has had a long career in the agriculture industry.  They lived in SE Asia for 15 years.  He is a member of the NCNM Board of Regents. He and his lovely wife Simone live South of Portland in Turner, Oregon.

Kneipp Water Cure Monthly (2010)
The library scanned the 1901 volume (V.2) of the Kneipp Water Cure Monthly. Each of the 12 issues is saved as a separate pdf file on the NCNM website. You can access the issues from this web page: http://www.ncnm.edu/library/KneipWaterCureMonthly.html.

A new database: InteractionsGuide (2010)
The library has subscribed to a new database published by Dr. Mitch Stargrove. The database provides clinically oriented evaluative information on both the adverse and beneficial interactions between herbs and/or nutrients and drugs. Click on the link to search from the NCNM campus (for the off campus link, check the NCNM databases list): InteractionsGuide. The library also bought several licenses for Dr. Stargrove's IBIS software, which is designed to give students and clinicians guidance regarding natural medicine treatments.

New Evening/Weekend Supervisor (2009)
Alison Wilbur is our newest library staff person. She is the evening/weekend library supervisor, and, like Heather James, our circulation coordinator, she is in the last year of her library and information science program at Emporia State University.

Natural Medicine Journal
This is a new official journal of the AANP.  It is a peer reviewed monthly e-journal. The first issue premiered in September 2009.  Check it out at this URL: http://www.naturalmedicinejournal.com.

Worldcat local (2009)
The library added a Worldcat local catalog. Worldcat is the largest library catalog in the world, and includes the holdings of virtually every library in the United States plus many international libraries. Why use NCNM Worldcat? One benefit would be this: If you are searching for something we don't own, then the results would tell you what other libraries in the region own it. You can also choose different languages for the catalog, including Chinese. Don't worry, we are not getting rid of our old catalog. NCNM Worldcat is an additional option. Check it out at this URL: http://ncnm.worldcat.org.

Chat with an NCNM librarian (2009)
We have added a chat feature to our library website. When you go to our home page--http://www.ncnm.edu/library/--you will see an invitation to chat bar floating in the lower right corner of the window. Click on the bar and pose a question to a librarian. This is especially useful if, for example, you want to ask a question in the evening or on a Saturday but don't want to come to campus.

Easier Off-Campus Database Access is Here! (2007)
Most of our databases that allow off-campus use can now be accessed with your name and library barcode. Find the database you want on the Databases webpage, then simply click on the "Off-Campus Users" link, and you will be taken to a page asking for your last name and barcode number. Some databases and journals still require a username and password, which can be obtained by visiting or calling the front desk. Questions? Call us at 503-552-1542.

Improved Full-Text Access From PubMed (2006)
Getting to full-text articles from your PubMed search is now much easier! PubMed's new LinkOut feature makes it easy to identify NCNM-subscribed articles from your list of search results. With one click, you can access an electronic article or verify that the library has the journal in print. This feature works both on and off campus. Read our short tutorial and start using this enhancement today.

International Journal of Naturopathic Medicine
There is a new peer reviewed journal of the profession that is available for free on the Web at http://www.intjnm.org. The inaugural online issue is for September 2004. In order to access the journal, you must first register (it's free and easy) and create your own user name and password. Check this new professional resource out.
