Library Frequently Asked
Questions

Q. What are the library's hours?
A. Please see the library hours page.

Q. Can anybody use the library?
A. The library is open to anybody who wishes to use our resources on-site. Borrowing privileges are restricted to NCNM students, faculty, staff and alumni. Current students, faculty and staff from OCOM, OHSU, WSCC, and Linfield College (Portland Campus) are eligible to borrow materials from NCNM Library. Members of the general public who wish to borrow materials from NCNM are encouraged to request them via interlibrary loan at their local public library.

Q. How do I renew the materials that I have checked out?
A. Borrowers may renew their library materials in person or by calling or emailing the Circulation Desk (phone: 503-552-1542; e-mail). You may call after hours and leave a message with your name and barcode number. Borrowers may directly renew their items on the Library Catalog, by clicking Your Library Account on the bottom left of the screen. Items (except reserve materials) may be renewed three times.

Q. How do I check out books from OHSU?
A. Current NCNM students and staff may check out books directly from any OHSU library by presenting their NCNM ID card with a valid library barcode. If you search the OHSU library catalog, and you discover a book that you want, you may request that the book be sent down to NCNM where it will be held for you. Just click the "Request" button on the catalog display screen, as described on the following page: http://www.ohsu.edu/library/howtos/request.shtml

Q. Can I use OHSU's databases and electronic journals?
A. Anybody can access OHSU's electronic resources by going to an OHSU library and using one of their public use computers. However, online access to these resources from anywhere else is limited to OHSU students and staff.

Q. What is Medline and how do I search it?
A. Medline is the world's largest biomedical research database. It has some full-text articles, but it is primarily a searchable index of citations and abstracts. You often have to look elsewhere for the full articles, or ask a librarian to order them for you. You can search Medline by using PubMed, which is free and available to everyone. To use PubMed, type a word or phrase into the search box, then click the "Go" button. For detailed instructions, please ask a librarian for assistance. Also check out the library's tutorial on Getting to full-text from PubMed.

Q. How can I access databases from home?
A. NCNM Library subscribes to various research databases and collections of electronic journals.  Most are accessible from home as well as on campus. If you are off campus, you must click on the off-campus users link in our databases list.

Q. Where can I find full-text journal articles online?
A. Please see the full-text options tuturial.

Q. How can I print double-sided documents in the library?
A. The default on all library printers is for duplex or double-sided printing, so you shouldn't have to change settings.

Q. How can I print more than 1 PowerPoint slide per page?
