News & EventsHelfgott faculty member Gene Bowman is receiving lots of press on his study Nutrient biomarker patterns, cognitive function, and MRI measures of brain aging published in Neurology. The study was featured in an Oregonian article, on OPB's website and on OPB's Think Out Loud. NCNM student Steve Chamberlin, his faculty mentor and collaborator Agatha Colbert, MD, and their collaborator, Adrian Larsen of Miridia Technology, Inc., were awarded the Heo-Jun Award from the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies (JAMS) for a research study that measured the rate of skin conductance for acupoints based on age, sex and time of day. Their study was published in JAMS in March. The $35,000 award was presented in early October at the 9th Annual International Scientific Acupuncture and Meridian Symposium. The conference focused on neural mechanisms that underlie acupuncture’s actions in treatment of cardiovascular disease, pain and other clinical areas for which it is applied. 2011 was a busy year at Helfgott - we held the firth annual Symposium for Portland Area Research on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (SPARC), launched the new Master of Science in Integrative Medicine Research degree (MSiMR) and worked on numerous research studies.
