Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine
Residency Program
As part of the process of assisting in the transition from student to practicing physician, the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education oversees the Residency applications and Clinical/Medical facility site applications. This office also assists students, alumni and other physicians and institutions in creating new and overseeing ongoing resident training sites.
NCNM has assumed a leadership role as the first naturopathic institution to develop a residency program. Currently, residency placement is a competitive process.
In addition to completion of the Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from an accredited institution, candidates must demonstrate professionalism, maturity, commitment to serve, excellent clinical abilities, and an aptitude for enhancing their clinical skills.
Today, the program has distant site residencies in seven states and 19 residents for the 2006-2007 academic year. These numbers are projected to grow steadily each year. Since National College is committed to the importance of a year of post doctoral clinical training, our goal is to assist the profession as it prepares to meet the ever-increasing demand for naturopathic residencies.
In cooperation with the American Association of Naturopathic Medical Colleges (AANMC), NCNM is committed to develop an adequate number of resident opportunities to allow the graduates of all accredited naturopathic degree programs to participate in a residency.
NCNM has maintained a residency program since 1979 and is currently involved in an accelerated effort to expand and refine the program in response to several perceived needs.
The naturopathic profession is establishing improved communication and cooperation with conventional medicine by creating an integrative residency program. Integrating the philosophies, characteristics, and therapeutics of naturopathic and allopathic medicine will improve patient care and help to advance healthcare into the 21st century.
An increasing number of states are adopting naturopathic licensing laws requiring a minimum of one (1) postdoctoral year of clinical training. The number of individuals who access alternative medicine is steadily growing. As a result, there is an increasing need to educate the public and support the field of naturopathic medicine through postdoctoral clinical training programs.
Some of the therapeutic modalities used in the practice of naturopathic medicine are becoming more specialized and complex, necessitating additional training for naturopathic physicians.
Naturopathic doctoral graduates desire more opportunities utilizing targeted diagnostic technologies and working with experienced physicians in their areas of interest. The NCNM Residency Program offers positions at its affiliate clinics as well as private practices throughout the Portland area. In addition, the program is continually expanding to include training at distant sites in small to medium size clinics and ho
spitals throughout the United States.
To qualify as an applicant for the NCNM Residency Program, individuals must have graduated with a naturopathic doctoral degree from a college or university that has been accredited or has been granted candidacy accreditation status by the Council for Naturopathic Medical Education. Graduates from other accredited colleges and universities are encouraged to apply to the NCNM Residency Program. Applications can be downloaded from our web site.
